Ah! Looks like the beautiful De La Ware Pavilion in not quite so beautiful Bexhill-on-Sea, East Sussex. Living in neighbouring Hastings, I have to say, Bexhill don't deserve it - it should be moved along the coast to us. I haven't been since they've finished working on it but it but I hear they've done a good job. hooray!
I wouldn't say it is finished, but yes it is beautiful. The criticism has been made that the pavillion has been restored at great expense just to provide a shop and a cafe. Well what is so wrong with that? That is not all it has to offer. Anywat John, what is wrong with Bexhill?!
My experience of Bexhill is that it's quite sinister. I've known people of my age who have moved down to Bexill from London, being too scared to come to sunny Hastings and they mysteriously age at lightening speed. They start playing bowls and going to bingo, they buy little motorised carts to get around the charity shops then they die. It happens all the time, it's like the X-Files - someone should do a docu-drama-reality-soap-wifeswap about it. That's what's wrong with Bexhill, Sancha.
well i can tell john hodgson, that i bought two well cool chairs in a nice little retro furniture shop in behxhill, near the tobacconist and the foundation garment shop. the pavilion was good before, but a bit old, and these days any culture venue seems to need a shop to survive...if john keeps putting people off bexhill then it will need more than a gallery shop!!
well brenda, now you have raised a question: what is arty anyway? Any who says arty needs to be ambitious? The shop is helpful when these guys have to compete for decreasing funding, and it means all the kiddies and not-so-kiddies can buy something a bit 'arty' to take home. We used to like buying a postcard or two from the Tate, or a book if we were really keen. Now there is a lot of irrelevant plastic junk in these places. Or is that the art?
Actually, I wouldn't want to put people off Bexhill, Edward, I just think they should be aware of the dangers. I'm also jealous that they have the Pavillion and we don't.
I'm no expert when it comes to art but I think the pavillion looks wonderful and worth a visit to Bexhill even if it is an awful place. Most of the coast in this country is awful isn't it? It all went wrong when they started to build piers probably

I don't know if they need a shop to survive and maybe the shop just makes it easier for them to do more ambitious arty things.
